CME AccreditationCME/CPD Overview Continuing medical education (CME) or Continuing professional development (CPD) are learning activities for medical professionals to maintain competence and to learn about new and developing areas in their field. CPD is becoming an increasingly important means for physicians to demonstrate their commitment to keeping themselves up to date in their areas of clinical practice. These learning activities are offered through formats such as onsite, online, teleconferencing, and video conferencing. Continuing medical education is considered a self-directed activity, although medical organizations such as the College of Family Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada have continuing education requirements that must be met by their membership.
